I’m a dog mom, small business owner, volunteer, and I work outside

Hi! My name is Kim and I joined Medium in mid-October. I like to write, but I’ve never really written consistently. Most of my writing is for work, which is fun, but I don’t get to choose my topics or content. I’ve written fewer than 20 stories so far, but I’m having fun with it and I enjoy the opportunity to choose my topics and explore different ideas.

It can also prevent expensive vet bills

Walking my dog in the desert. Photo taken by the author.

I was new to Nevada at the time. I had opened all the office doors to let in the spring air. Soon, we heard my coworker’s dog whining from the corner of the shop. Then, the unmistakable sound of a rattlesnake shaking its tail.

The dog had been through Rattlesnake Avoidance Training. She knew not to go near the snake, so she wasn’t in danger of getting bit.

Now that spring has arrived in the Northern Hemisphere, it’s time to think about snakes. Rattlesnakes are common in the desert where I live. …

I’ve owned a small soap making business since 2016. In August 2020, I decided to add a website to make it more official. My husband set me up with a Squarespace account and I got to work designing the website.

I spent three weeks working on the design. I worked on it before work, after work, and on my days off. YouTube videos helped me figure out the hard parts, until finally, I had something I was proud of.

Squarespace has a library of licensed images that…

NATURE

A beautiful but deadly wildflower

“The sacred datura, through its night-blooming flowers, evokes a feeling of mystery, and it has long been used as a portal to the spirit world, visions, hallucinations and witchcraft — dangerously so.” — Desert USA

Sacred Datura (Datura wrightii) has many names. It’s also called Moonflower, Jimsonweed, Devil’s Trumpet, and more. All parts of this plant are poisonous. Low doses are hallucinogenic while larger doses cause death soon after consuming.

There are several species of this plant and they grow from sea level up to 6,500 feet. …

It’s hard at first but it gets easier with time

Mountain biking. Photo by Thomas Schweighofer on Unsplash

This morning, my husband and I went on our first mountain bike ride of the year. The weather was perfect, and we wanted to go on a long ride. The only problem was, our muscles were not ready. We rode a flat loop and after five miles, our legs were complaining loudly.

It will take several rides to get back in shape. We will have to ride up hills, over rocks, and cover more miles. Our muscles will grow stronger with each ride.

Eventually, mountain bike riding will feel more like fun and less like work.

I’ve found the same…

The computer was not cooperating

I heard the quote above from a customer who came in to make a purchase this morning. I apologized for the slow credit card machine and he laughed. I laughed too.

The first day of a new month is always busy, but today was crazy.

Disgruntled visitors came in with a problem and left in a better mood than when they came in. They actually found what they were looking for. At least we were joking around by the time they left.

The phone rang…
