Hi! My name is Kim and I joined Medium in mid-October. I like to write, but I’ve never really written consistently. Most of my writing is for work, which is fun, but I don’t get to choose my topics or content. I’ve written fewer than 20 stories so far, but I’m having fun with it and I enjoy the opportunity to choose my topics and explore different ideas.
I Have a Blended Family
I was born in Las Vegas, Nevada. My dad worked in the oil field so we moved around a lot. My mom and dad eventually separated. …
The water is clearer than the air, and the air is the air that angels breathe.

Lake Tahoe is a popular year-round tourist destination. People visit from around the world to swim in the lake’s crystal-clear water, catch fish, hike, ski, and more.
When my husband and I moved to Nevada in 2011, it was possible to drive around the lake without risking our lives. We could find parking spots for places we wanted to visit. Today, that’s no longer the case.
Traffic is a nightmare. The last time I drove up there, I got honked at…
My favorite part about writing on Medium is its community atmosphere. I know I’ve said that in so many comments, but it’s true. When I joined at the end of October last year, I didn’t know what to expect.
It took some time, but gradually I felt like I was getting to know some of the other writers. That didn’t happen because I read their work. It happened because I left comments and they wrote back. When others commented on my work, I started responding to them, too.
At first though, I was one of them. The “one clap” reader…
I was scrolling through Nextdoor.com when I found an intense argument that started with a long rant about a local restaurant. Two friends tried to enter without a mask and were refused. When they walked to a gas station to buy masks, they lost their reservation.
Our state has a mask mandate. Businesses have to require masks. They can be fined if they don’t. More people are pushing back, making things difficult for the employees.
Employees and businesses have had a tough year. Being rude to business owners and their employees won’t reverse our governor’s mask mandate. …
I stood still for more than a minute, listening to the rushing water, feeling the cold drops of water on my face. I bent down, examining the bright green moss that was growing on the rocks.
After a busy week at work, I was more than ready for my days off. On Thursday mornings, I usually go for a hike in the desert above Carson City. This week I decided to hike to the King’s Canyon waterfall.
It’s a short hike with a little elevation gain, but the view of Carson City is worth the burning calves. The hike from…
I’m thinking of my mom on this Mother’s Day Weekend. She passed away two years ago and I think of her every day. She had some funny advice that I’ve been laughing about lately.
After college, I moved four hours away from home to Moab, Utah. A family friend was coming to visit and my mom wanted her to bring me a blender.
My friend handed me the blender with a strict warning from my mom. Don’t stick your hand in there! I shook my head and laughed.
Later, when we spoke on the phone, I asked her if she…
A few months ago, I came across an article written by Benya Clark. It was called “Want to Grow on Medium? Let me help!.” The article caught my attention. I’m always interested in learning more about this platform.
In this article, Benya pointed out that there are thousands of articles giving advice about how to succeed on Medium. His approach is different. He is offering free, personalized feedback. I haven’t seen anyone else doing that, except through comments and private notes.
I just signed up for my first volunteer project since the pandemic began and I’m excited. The project is painting garden gnomes for the local arboretum and botanical gardens. Volunteers will hide the painted gnomes in the gardens for people to find.
I haven’t volunteered since May of 2019. I started in March, but after my mom passed away, I decided it was important to be home more often. It’s been two years, and I’m finally ready to branch out and volunteer again!
The Wilbur D. May Arboretum is a green oasis near the university in Reno, Nevada. Visitors can…
I was scrolling through Facebook one day when I came across a friend’s post. On his days off he had hiked through a series of abandoned railroad tunnels. These tunnels are located above the infamous Donner Lake.
“We’re going. We have to go see that!”
My husband was born and raised in Northern Nevada and he didn’t know about the tunnels. He wanted to check them out too. On our next day off together, we loaded up the dogs and headed towards Northern California.
We brought headlamps and a flashlight. Each dog had a tiny colorful light on their harness…
